How to encode or decode Base64 online

  1. Open Base64 Converter

Open the Hanoon Base64 converter in your browser.

  2. Enter your data

Paste text to encode, or paste a Base64 string to decode. You can also upload a file.

  3. Get the result

The conversion happens instantly. Copy the output or download the decoded file.

What is Base64 encoding?

Base64 is reversible binary-to-text encoding, not encryption. With UTF-8, Hello becomes SGVsbG8= and 한글 becomes 7ZWc6riA; decoding with UTF-8 restores the text.

How do I encode a file to Base64?

Choose File and Encode, then drop or select a file; the Base64 result is generated automatically and can be copied. To restore a file, choose File and Decode, paste the Base64 and download the result. Follow the displayed upload limit, which depends on device memory; encoded input has a separate size limit.

Is my data secure?

Conversion inputs and file bytes are processed in your browser and are not sent to the app backend. Page assets and usage analytics may use the network. Share links contain compressed input that recipients can read and that may remain in browser history.

What is the difference between Base64 and Base64URL?

URL-safe replaces + and / with - and _. This tool also removes trailing = from URL-safe output. Data URL output adds a data:...;base64, prefix and always uses standard Base64, even with URL-safe enabled. Neither format encrypts data.

Can I preview Base64-encoded images?

File mode can preview PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and BMP when format and image-size checks pass and the browser can display them. SVG is not previewed. A successfully decoded file can still be downloaded without a preview.

Why does decoding fail or produce unreadable text?

Check the selected standard or URL-safe mode. SGVsbG8= is valid standard Base64; SGVsbG8 is accepted only in URL-safe mode. Invalid characters, lengths and padding are rejected, so do not add = blindly. For text, select the original character encoding: valid Base64 bytes may still be invalid UTF-8. Decode binary data in File mode.
